Open Water Swim Instruction

Empire Tri Club offers a wide variety of open water swim lessons and group clinics to help you prepare for your upcoming triathlon or open water swim event.  Swimming in open water is VERY DIFFERENT from swimming in a pool.  Laps in your local pool will not adequately prepare you for the heightened stress athletes face on race day.  Many athletes neglect to factor in many of the elements they’ll face on race day including race-day adrenaline, mass swim starts, swimming in crowds, not being able to see clearly under water, waves, currents, choppy water, blinding sun, sighting for buoy’s and more.  Therefore, it is highly beneficial to incorporate open water swimming into your training regimen to ensure you’re adequately prepared for your event. Whether you’re training for your first sprint or an Ironman, our coaches will give you the skills and confidence you need to master the swim.

About Open Water Swim Lessons and Clinics:

Coney Island Beach is open from Memorial Day – Labor Day.  Empire Tri Club coaches are available for lessons when lifeguards are on duty (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Location:  The swim will take place at Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY.  Meet on the boardwalk in front of the Aquarium.  When you enter the boardwalk next to the NY Aquarium entrance, you’ll see a large raised structure (bathrooms) to your left.  To your right there is are benches under an awning/structure across from a big mural on the wall & “The Cyclone” roller coaster ride, which is where we will meet.  If you arrive late, head straight down to the water.  Map

Directions:  West 8th Street/Aquarium stop on the F/Q is the closest.  You can also take the D or N to the end of the line (Coney Island/ Stillwell Ave stop – short walk to meeting point).  Some people lock their bikes along the railing on the boardwalk, but please do so at your own risk!  There will NOT be someone watching bags on the beach during the swim, so we suggest that you leave your valuables at home!
